Reading the changes
Annual growth compares each quarter with the same quarter a year earlier. Cumulative growth measures the change from the selected start quarter, which is set to zero. A lower positive growth rate still means output is rising; a negative rate means it fell over that comparison.
Real GDP adjusts for price changes and uses chain-volume measures with 2023–24 as the reference year. The figures are seasonally adjusted and may be revised by the ABS.
One useful lens. Not the whole story.
GDP per person divides total output by population. It is an average of production, not typical earnings, take-home pay or a measure of how evenly income is shared. It also does not capture all unpaid work, health or environmental outcomes.
The accepted GDP-per-person history starts in September quarter 1973; total GDP starts in September quarter 1959. Each section retains its own full available history.
