Inflation tells us how quickly prices are changing. Here’s the big picture, what’s driving it, and why it matters.

Not every price change has the same impact.
It depends on how much prices change and how much of the spending basket they represent. Open a category in the graphic or bars to explore its detail.
In ABS category names, n.e.c. means not elsewhere classified — items not separately listed under a more specific category.

Where space allows, blocks show basket weight and annual price change. On narrow screens some labels are shortened or hidden; the full category names appear in the contribution list below.
Published contributions to overall CPI annual inflation. Child categories overlap with their parents and should not be added to them.
Basket areas use the 2025 CPI weighting pattern, retained for 2026. December 2024 is its price-reference period. Annual price changes and contributions are September 2026 monthly CPI observations. Contributions use published ABS figures.
