How much does
mining matter?
Compare the total, mining and a calculated total-less-mining series. This helps show how the pattern changes when mining is removed from the published total.

“Total less mining” is calculated by subtracting the published mining level from the published total. It is a residual, rather than a separately published ABS non-mining series. It retains the survey’s industry coverage and is not a measure of every other Australian business.

For total less mining, both quarterly and annual changes are calculated from residual levels. For the published total and mining, quarterly changes use the ABS movement series. Separately adjusted series and rounding mean displayed parts need not reconcile exactly. Differences in growth rates are not percentage-point contributions.
