What would your money buy?

See how inflation changes what your dollars can buy, and what the same basket would cost at another date.

Purchasing power

What this amount can buy.

How to read this chart

The line shows the purchasing power of the selected amount at each date, expressed in the starting date’s dollars. It starts at your selected amount. If prices rise, that amount buys less.

We divide the selected amount by the CPI increase since the start. This measures consumer purchasing power, not wages, house prices or investment returns.

Equivalent cost

What the same basket would cost.

How to read this chart

The line shows how much you would need at each date to buy the basket that cost your selected amount at the start. If prices rise, the equivalent cost increases.

We multiply the selected amount by the CPI increase since the start. Both charts use the same published CPI observations and dates.
