How has this category’s price changed?

Investigate one category’s annual inflation or total price change. Explore Australia or a capital city, or compare the same category between two places.

In ABS category names, n.e.c. means not elsewhere classified — items not separately listed under a more specific category.

These figures show how prices have changed, not which place is cheaper. Capital-city CPI does not describe the whole state or territory.

How to read these figures and their source

Hover over, tap or keyboard-focus the chart’s data points to see their dates, category, place and values. Use the arrow keys to move between points and Escape to dismiss the details. Annual inflation compares prices with the same period a year earlier; the start-date selection changes the visible history, not that annual comparison. Total price change compares the CPI index at the chosen start and end dates. Published annual changes are used where available; otherwise annual changes are calculated from same-frequency index levels one year apart. Missing observations are not filled.

Comparisons use matching dates. Each monthly or quarterly history keeps its own published coverage and basis; they are never joined into one line. A city’s overall CPI is used for a city comparison, not substituted national category history.
